Cycling along the River Inn
It will not surprise anyone to know that Tyrol has an inexhaustible network of mountain roads and spectacular views.
However, the extensive river basin of the Inntal valley is also attractive for families.
SONNHOF BIKE RENTAL
If you spontaneously decide to do a cycling tour, this is no problem at the Sonnhof. Our bike rental service will be able to find a bike to suit your
needs – we can offer you mountain bikes, touring bikes, children's bikes and, if you want something special, a tandem bike too!
CYCLIST SERVICE
Over the past few years, a great deal has been invested in the comfort of cycling enthusiasts.
The paths are extremely well marked, information on the highlights of the route is easily and widely available, and plenty of technical support is also provided.
Roadside restaurants also
cater to cyclists and try to provide them with energy with their healthy and hearty snacks – the Sonnhof is no exception.
The Österreichische Bundesbahn (Austrian Rail Service) also offers a range of services for people travelling by train with their bikes. For example, the "Einfach-Raus-Ticket" for group tours, or the "Regio-Biking-Ticket" for shorter routes.
THE INN CYCLE PATH
The Inn cycle path is more than 500 km long and is one of
the longest cycle paths in Europe. Starting in Maloja (Switzerland) and leading to Passau (Germany) through the Tyrolean Inn Valley, in part through fairly remote areas and old towns and markets, this route passes through a great contrast in scenery with many cultural highlights and places of interest.
As there are very few hills to climb, the Inn cycle path offers unspoiled cycling fun for the whole family.
ALONG THE INN CYCLE PATH TOWARDS INNSBRUCK
Without stopping, the journey from Radfeld to Innsbruck takes an average of 4 hours. However, you do not need to ride that far as there are a number of landmarks along the way that are well worth a visit.
The first section of the Inn cycle path leads you directly along the banks of the River Inn to Silberstadt Schwaz – an excellently-preserved, small mediaeval town that flourished through mining. A journey by train into the tunnels of the old
mine cools you down in summer and is a real thrill.
A little way past Schwaz, the cycle path winds through meadows and fields until it reaches Wattens and brings you
directly to the "giants". Here, you find a giant created by André Heller for Swarovski with an enchanting sparkling crystal world inside.
Afterwards, you pass several villages and cross the surrounding vegetable fields of the rural growing areas. You can also enjoy these products at the surrounding farmers' markets and in restaurants. You thus arrive at Hall, once a rich town thanks to salt mining and the minting business. Hall is a particularly charming town for it is built on a hill
side. The small alleys and passages interweave in such a bizarre way that you feel like you are strolling through an ancient fairy tale.
The Inn cycle path leads you directly along the River Inn away from the traffic into the city centre of the regional capital and university city of Innsbruck.
ALONG THE INN CYCLE PATH: STRASS TOWARDS EBBS
When you enter the Zillertal valley, the Inn cycle path leads
past the Schloss Rotholz castle and offers views of the "Wallfahrtskirche Mariä Heimsuchung" pilgrims' church on the Brettfall. Kramsach is famous for its Museum of Tyrolean Farmhouses and its museum cemetery. Visitors to Kufstein are welcomed by the impressive fortress. The Inn cycle path lives up to its name on this stretch – it stays close to the river bank from Strass to Brixlegg, then leads through a residential area, and from Radfeld crosses meadows until it reaches Wörgl. From Kirchbichl, you cycle through idyllic countryside until you reach Erl.
